Everybody’s talking about the “nervous system”. . .

Everybody’s talking about the

“nervous system”. . .

But what about the SPINE??

Good morning, sunshine! I’m so happy to be reaching out to you today โœจ

I want to touch on a topic that I’ve been dying to touch on for SO long.

Have you noticed that lately people everywhere seem to be talking about “the nervous system”?

Just a cursory connection to wellness and healing oriented content on Instagram or Youtube, podcasts, or books will bring you all kinds of tips, tricks, theories, and modalities meant to address your nervous system.

In case you were wondering, this has NOT always been the case!

In fact, I specifically remember only 5-6 years ago a mentor of mine in the world of Network Spinal advised me that I shouldn’t use “nervous system” in my marketing or speaking with clients– because that just confuses people ๐Ÿ˜‚

In fact, this particular doctor urged us to use “nerve system” with our patients and clients instead of “nervous system.” Nerves are physical and make sense to people, he argued. “Nervous system,” he said, just makes people think about being nervous ๐Ÿ˜‚

Even at that time, I remember starting to see an increasing amount of Ted Talks and videos from thought-leader-types left and right talking about the nervous system.

It felt highly fortuitous to me that I was already engaged in work to help people heal at that level of health (and luckily I DID NOT heed advice about not using “nervous system” in my communications ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค—)

Now, public interest in helping heal and better regulate their nervous systems seems to be sky-high ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ

It’s become the province of body-centered psychotherapy practices and techniques, self-care techniques, and is propagated by academics, practitioners, coaches, and even spiritual gurus.

A quick search of podcasts on Spotify related to the nervous system! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I’m happy about all of this!

Chiropractors and Network Spinal doctors don’t own the “nervous system” (though arguably chiropractors waaaayyy missed the boat at a critical juncture when they were sticking to their old-timey ideas about the public instead of picking up on this “nervous system” trend) ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿšข

Public interest around nervous system regulation and dysregulation is in response to a HUGE need for techniques, modalities, and practitioners who are willing to go deeper ๐ŸŒ€

I think a lot of people started to notice that medically (and even in the realm of natural health!) you can work on fixing the parts all day long, but if the system is habitually in a stress-response, the fixing can’t go very far.

I think also, with the rise of psychotherapy and general acceptance (and embrace) of weekly talk-therapy as a helpful ongoing wellness practice, people also started to realize that you can change your thoughts and work on thinking differently about your past traumas and stressors, but if your nervous system and body aren’t on board it could be a losing battle ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

In short, the interest around the nervous system, and the many ways you can address your nervous system, is too huge and too numerous to be contained within one type of practitioner and one profession.

We need healing on many levels, and from multiple angles and perspectives ๐Ÿ™โœจ๐ŸŒ

The unique and helpful thing that I think Network Spinal has to add to this growing body of work about the nervous system and how to address it is the central role of the SPINE in expressing, modulating, and limiting energy and information to move freely through the nervous system (ie for you to be able to move, have emotion, feel, think, and function).

And by “spine” I’m not primarily talking about the bones of the spine.

I’m talking about the continuous system of bungee-cord like nerve tissue from your brain and brain stem, through your spine cord, and then branching out into your body โœจ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐ŸŒ€๐Ÿ’—

These are some photos/illustrations I have used in my “Intro to Care” presentation that are meant to illustrate the centrality of the spine to nervous system function โšก๏ธโœจ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Notice how in these images we see specific body postures that involve the spine ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ

The posture of the body, expressing from the brain and through every nerve cell of the body, causes, impacts, effects, and limits tension, function, emotion, and thought (whether it’s fight, flight, freeze, flop, or some combination of all of these!)

Arguably, your nervous system, and your spine as a huge part of that, are busy at all times playing the program that is YOU ๐Ÿ’ฅ

This is why I strongly believe that while you absolutely need to be diving into learning more about the nervous system this on social media, podcasts, and the like, and finding out about new modalities and practitioners and working on self-care for your nervous system, that working with a practitioner through a spine-centered approach needs to be KEY ๐Ÿ”‘

I know I’m biased, but WOW Network Spinal does so much for so many people on their healing journey by addressing the nervous system through a spine-centered approach โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒ

Those are my burning thoughts for the week! Thank you so much for staying engaged ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at your next visit. Make sure to scroll down for updates on “For the Love of Pets,” and the Appreciation Day โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’ฅ๐ŸŒ
